TECHNIQUE 88: THEORY OF THE ORIGIN OF MEST

A lecture given on 23 June 1952.A lecture given on 23 June 1952.

When we get this tone scale worked out here, we find we have a broader scale than we had before, which goes from Absolute Zero to Infinity, and it goes from 0 to 28 as the band in which we are interested.

What is matter? Horribly enough, it is evidently a very solid thought which is chaotic enough in its arrangement of attention units that you can’t do too much about it. That is an interesting thought. Take a look at it for a moment. You are so used to seeing that floor be here in now all the time; it gets dirty, it gets; clean, it gets this and that, and you say, “That is just the same floor on a time continuum from here on out, and it is just that floor, and it is nothing else. That is all it is, just that floor, and it’s solid, and we know it’s there because when you walk on it you can feel it.” Oh yes? I can give you a somatic you can feel too.

What is a maybe? This whole band (0 to 28) is maybe. Maybe is simply the undecided thought To Be or Not To Be, that is maybe. Maybe it is, or maybe it isn’t. Am I, or am I not? Do I, or do I not? Do I know, or don’t I know? Am I cause, or am I effect? Shall I use this motion? etc. That’s a maybe. To understand a maybe more clearly I should show you something more than this scale, and that is some more of exactly what we have been going over. Do you know the first few axioms of Dianetics? Static, or Theta has the capability of animating and mobilizing MEST; that’s an early one. Well, let’s go one step above that. It has the capability of creating MEST. That is a little earlier axiom, and we are not going to deal with that axiom particularly. We are going to take it right where you know it, and that is:

Now if enough people got together and thought chaotically enough, and drove enough people down into apathy and below apathy, you would eventually get planets and everything. You can carry this theory on and actually work out the creation of the MEST universe or the creation of any universe. As you run a preclear way back on the time track, you get an area he is fond of calling The Home Universe. “This is the home universe,” he says. And what does he do in the home universe? Ask him, and you get a description or him making illusions, and a lot of people sitting around making illusions, and the whole pattern I gave you above. You will discover various odd mechanisms that they invented at that time.

(1) Every counter effort is potentially an effort, and (2) Thoughts (about the material universe) are preceded by counter efforts. If you were completely sane you would be able to use every motion you ever received. If you can’t use every motion you ever received, you are aberrated. So, every time you have gotten a counter effort you have gotten something that you possibly could employ as an effort. And if you restrain yourself from employing it as an effort, you hang yourself with it. If you get a counter-effort, and you are unwilling to employ it after you have started to employ it (or just thought of employing it ) you have a maybe. So, any basic incident is an incident on the track where you inhibit the employment of a counter- effort, and there you have made a maybe in reason. And that is the basic of maybe. But, there is a more basic, Basic, and that is - “What are you using facsimiles for anyhow?”

A common one is the thought pool. This is still unsolved on the track I still don’t know what the thought pool is all about. There is a pool of thought, and all of a sudden one day a black spot appears in the middle of it, and the fellow can’t move. That incident you will find on most time tracks. Here was the pool of illusion, and if you ever want to see grief pour off a case, it is the individuals loss of his home universe. They will tell you in various ways. You can take the most hard bitten preclear and run him back to a point of the track where all of a sudden the stars are falling down in his universe. He will cry and cry. He had a universe, he was probably one of several who invented this universe, and it was a perfectly good universe, and one day all of the stars fell down. Why? Somebody else got a universe invented, and it sort of overlapped and ate it all up. And that is what our MEST universe is doing, evidently. It is an expanding universe, and it just keeps on eating into everybody’s time and space.

The axioms apply to facsimiles from one end to the other; the Static, and what it does about facsimiles. It goes to a specific incident on the track in Technique 88. It tells you that you have got to have an obsession. And the obsession is that when you get a counter-effort you have got to use it as an effort. It’s an obsession, and it makes out of you a mirror, a stimulus- response mechanism, and so for ever after that, you keep making facsimiles to use facsimiles to make facsimiles to ........... on and on and on and on. That is number one aberration, and then above that is, where did you restrain them? So, here you are as the disk in and this tennis ball comes in and hits you (the disk) and comes out having velocity and a new direction.

You see, here is your preclear one day, and everything is going along just fine, and all of a sudden there is 6 inches of mold on everything. Some black spiders come up from somewhere, and everybody runs away and leaves him or something. You will find this incident on the track. It’s a rough one to run, for it is really solid. Because, what happens to the guy? He all of a sudden starts getting rigid, and he can’t move. He is a part, all of a sudden, of the MEST universe. That is how people get into this MEST universe.

There is an incident on the track where you are hit with motion and finally develop an obsession about motion; and up to that point you could take it or leave it alone. The incident that gives you this obsession about returning motion is called “The Bubble Gum Incident.” (Please note these very technical terms, like Bubble Gum.) So, this incident that makes you do this, is the basic incident on facsimiles. Before that you didn’t have to have facsimiles. That was situation one. Situation two, is where the motion comes in and you say, “No!” There is a maybe. The “maybe” is the motion that you have received that you may, or may not employ. If you do or don’t use it, you are hung with it. For instance, they have a sort of aberration about shooting policemen in this society. You, one day while you are walking down the street get shot by a policeman. In the next life you see a policeman, and he doesn’t look good to you, so you shoot him, and they send you to the electric chair. In the next life you don’t like to be shot, but every time you turn around you think you ought to kill somebody, and you get a headache. That is a maybe. You have developed a nice maybe, and you have learned that you should not shoot policemen, which is a beneficial lesson to policemen. There is what I mean by a maybe. In other words, I got the motion which gives me a right to use it, but I don’t dare use it, and I’ve got it here, and it says, “If you get it you can do it,” but the second you do it you can’t do it. The reason you can’t do it is the Third situation- which is this, this mirror situation.This is a great swindle that comes out of this first incident (Bubble Gum)- the one that gives you the obsession which says, all you can do is return motion and can’t create anything, just return what you get. I’m talking about the most basic aberration there is.

The incidents which I am describing to you are Technique 88 incidents, and I use them to describe to you the length and breadth of the time track by giving you these incidents on it. It is a rather frightening thought, that all this is just a thought, sit down, and get the feeling that what you are feeling just exists in now, and wasn’t there, and won’t be there, but is just going along with you. Can you feel that, just the shell, the insecurity of the universe? That is the truth, and that is about what it is. It is attention units held in the spring of facsimilies. It’s facsimiles, but just facsimiles that are below the border. When we get this area in here, (tone 28 on up) this becomes the THETA Universe or THETA Q, and the area below 28 becomes the MEST Universe Q. The man on the street isn’t going to believe you if you walk up to him, and tell him that the street is just thought. All I am giving you is a theory of origin, which is substantiated by the E-meter, and the fact that preclears can run these incidents and feel so very much better. About the only grief charge you will get on some preclears is when all of a sudden the stars are falling.

We have these two mirrors (people), and each feels that he is only a mirror and nothing more- so then A not watching carefully creates a motion. It had to be when he wasn’t watching, for it violates the primary obsession. He throws it at person B, and B turns it around, (mirror fashion) and throws it back. Then person A throws it back, and B throws it back, etc. etc. Each of them of course knows that he can’t create anything, they are just mirrors, so they can’t admit to themselves that every time it hits the mirror, instead of decreasing in violence, it increases in violence. And what is the proof of this? Did you ever see one person get angry at another person? Then the second person gets angry at the first person, and the first person gets angrier - etc. etc. with the rage going up, up, up, and up until something blows. Well, where is that extra motion coming from? Well, the extra motion of anger in this situation is actually being created by the individuals involved. Being created and added to the wave, so they aren’t just a mirror; they are adding to it. Just ask a preclear to feel counter-emotion, and he will get this. Did you ever walk into a room and see the counter-emotion? Did you ever get hit by a wall of it? It’s actually wave length you are asking him to run.

So, here is the zero on the thought line. I don’t know what zero on this thought scale would be unless it meant “No Universe”. Zero time is no time; zero space is no space and no time,no thought .... zero, no universe. The way you go out is for one of these zero’s to jump up the tone scale and postulate something; the decision To be. And this is followed by the decision to create something, which is probably followed by the decision to keep it, and somehow followed by the decision to dispose of it. The method of disposition which is most workable is TIME; as a method of disposition of old used facsimiles. The best method to dispose of facsimiles is time.

By using old techniques with a preclear to look for someone who is occluded, you will find that person stays occluded until you blow a death or something like that. Just ask your preclear for the times this occluded person glared at your preclear. Get the sensation of your preclear looking at the darkness where this occluded person is, and ducking the glare. Just make him do this a few times, duck, duck, duck. All of a sudden he will feel that facsimile, and the occluded person will become hazily distinct. And then the preclear will run it off the track as sort of a line charge, all of those glares and returns from that person, and then all of a sudden he will get a clear picture. What’s he doing? He is running a wave length out-put from the occluded person. There is part of the mechanism. The other part is that when the person died, the preclear felt he had killed him, and he probably did.

This system, although pretty good, is not very workable.

So, this mirror mechanism is Number 3 of these operations. From person A to person B goes a wave which is returned back and forth, and back and forth, being added to each time. So, what’s the contest? The contest is usually to find out which one is cause, unless they are engaged in a mutual goal; then they will look at each other, and become more and more enthusiastic right on up. But if they are mad at each other, sooner or later one of them is going to go into apathy, because somebody is going to win. One of them is going to outdo (out-wave-length) the other. There we have why the fight of an individual to get up the tone scale is defeated by the fact that he is throwing a wave length at every human being he knows, and is getting it back. He doesn’t know that he can’t be sane and human at the same time. How wrong can you be? The wrongest you can be is to be a dead human. But, if you want to be pretty wrong, just be human. Therefore, I have given you the very important datum about time relationships. Low on the time scale you have very little motion in an awfully long time. High on it, a lot of motion in a little time. To kids high on the tone scale the days last forever. They can’t seem to get enough to do per unit of time. When they are old they sit down and say, “I’ll just take a couple of minutes and finish this off.” They just get up, and then the first thing they know, it is time to go to bed again.

The theories on which this MEST universe is predicted are not perfect. I’m not talking now about my theory that I just gave you; whether it is imperfect or not isn’t very important, it just happens to work fairly well. It isn’t as good as the clear cut Theta-Mest Theory, because it takes you a little further into theory. It’s got a bug in it, this confounded MEST universe of ours. It is a lousy universe. In order to agree with anybody, and have any matter, people had to sacrifice part of their power of illusion or creation (illusion and creation being the same thing). So, they have to sacrifice part of their of illusion and creation, and therefore sacrifice part of their power of cause. Immediately, they have got to have some unknowns, and assume that they don’t know, because if they were cause they would know. So, they start coming down this tone scale, and come into this band. This is a very narrow tolerance band, and the band we are working with Dianetics. It is the band from zero to forty.

A day is a year long for a child in school. Grown ups, not realizing this, put children in school. A grown up just doesn’t have enough time to accomplish what he wants to do, and he eventually does nothing. You have known people who just kept saying,” Oh! I have so much to do I just don’t seem to have time to do it in.” And he will spend all of his time telling you how he hasn’t got any time, instead of doing something. What is wrong with that person is that his concept of time is that he hasn’t got any time, and the days are going by like a picket fence for this person low on the tone scale.

This tolerance band is nearer to being Zero to twenty eight or twenty five. There is no existence below that you would call life. But, there is matter below zero, and it is a gradient scale of matter. It gets heavier and heavier and heavier until it becomes what you call solid. The physicist is the first person to admit this, that no solids are solid. So, let’s call this band in here from zero to twenty eight, the life band. The lowest zero (absolute zero) is impossible to obtain, and these tone scale numbers are entirely arbitrary, except that the numbers do express harmonics At 28 the preclear is up near infinity, and at zero he is pretty close to matter.

We have got to know these 3 stages. Before our first axiom, is an axiom that says, Theta can create wave length, energy, space, and time. And the way they pin them in the MEST universe is by obsessing a theta being with the idea that he can only return wave length, energy, space, and time as received. This is the tennis ball hitting the plate effect. Number 2 is the process by which the individual receives the motion and stops it, and stops himself from using it, and every time he does that, is a big maybe. Then there is Number 3, where he becomes a mirror to everything he does, and everybody does this, and everybody becomes a mirror to everybody else, and you get the chronic aberration of all chronic aberrations which is A-R-C.

But, from here on up ( 28 up ) are impossible heights of beingness, which are higher and higher in their illusory or creative value. You get much above this, and you don’t have any interest in this universe that we are in, in any degree. You don’t have any interest in anyone else’s universe as you go up from that point, and up at the top you are making your own universe, and you aren’t even in that one, and that’s the end of that. So, for all intents and purposes the only band we can study is from 0 to 28. Above 28 there is nothing of him to study; he is gone. From here, (zero) on down, you can find him at any funeral parlor. Did you ever see a fossil, a mummy?

Remember the Hurdy-Gurdy techniques that showed all possible aberrations using A-R-C in which I drew all the lines from the A-R-C Triangle for each Dynamic? Well, I didn’t need to put in all the lines, because A-R-C is itself the aberration. Any A-R-C is an aberration. Therefore, any A-R-C from 0 to 28 in the MEST universe compared to potential sanity, is aberrative. And why is it that way? It is he- cause with Number One - a person returns and has to use only the efforts he receives. With No. Two - he stops efforts he has received, and with No. Three - he starts throwing these things back and forth with all other beings. (See Diagram)

A MEST body is a pretty solid affair, and yet it is alive, at least a little. The matter in this MEST body is in the MEST band, and hence below zero. The life in it is above zero, and these component parts make your location on the tone scale.

So, here we have a theory. You can do with it what you wish. You don’t have to have the theory to make these techniques work. I could, but I won’t, say that it is the ultimate theory, and since I worked it out you had better accept it or get flunked. No, if you just are aware that the theory exists, you know at least that this cycle exists, you will be able to spot a lot of these basic incidents which you will find very interesting to run on the theta line.

If you have One and have no knowledge of energy, you will use One or Three, and neither is any good. It works out that an individual who is obsessed with One when he gets into the

It also gives you a background for the rest of this work. Anything from 0 to 28 in the line of reason is really a maybe of greater or lesser magnitude. There is no absolute knowledge from 0 to 28. What man contacts as man is only relatively workable. Why? Because there is your band of truth, and it is just relative truth. When you go up above this you get your infinite truths, and when you go down below this you get your negative truths. So, anytime you work with active reason (by which I mean - thought impinging on a universe, or on bodies, or on energy) you are dealing with relative truths, and not absolutes. In past lectures I have talked about 3 bins: Bin One - of absolutes that has everything in it, Bin Two- which is all paths to knowledge or to the absolutes, and Bin Three - which is what you and I know. The stuff in

If you don’t have One (the obsession on motion), you can use Two, and disintegrate incoming motion.If you don’t have One (the obsession on motion ), you can use Two, and disintegrate incoming motion. If you have One and have no knowledge of energy, you will use One or Three, and neither is any good.

Bin Three changes continuously, and there is nothing true in Bin Three at all, for everything in there is relative to everything else in one way or another. Some of it is just downright lies, but that is what man knows. But, he goes up through Bin Two, captures some knowledge from Bin One, and when he brings it down from Bin One it goes over the bridge of Bin Two, and it changes into a workability, and it becomes relatively untrue. We keep up that cycle from absolute truth, and we try to bring down through mysticism, scientology, physics, what have you, into Bin Three, knowledge as man knows it. That knowledge is from 0 to 28. There is knowledge and absence of knowledge below that band, and plus knowledge above it, until you strike up in the impossible category of “I KNOW”. You get a fellow up into the “I KNOW” category all the way across the board, and his “I KNOW” is so nebulous that all that he knows is what he knows for him. He does not translate it into Bin Three, so it does not become known to you. He knows for him- you’ve seen them, they go around spinning all the time.

It works out that an individual who is obsessed with One when he gets into the society (which is Three) just has a heck of a time, for he is just a mirror to all the people he knows. He is in a terrible fix, and everybody in our 0 to 28 band has that state potentially. So, you can’t be human and be right, because you think you have to return the motions you receive from human beings, and they are wrong. If you do Two, and you don’t return the motion, it winds up all of your facsimiles. Why? Because every time you receive a counter-effort you have to use an old facsimile in order to stop that counter-effort from becoming your effort. And to stop it you put a facsimile on it, and you hold it with that facsimile, and you say, “I’ve got to stop this facsimile because I’m liable to be executed or electrocuted if I shoot this cop.” So, the fellow takes a facsimile to stop a facsimile, and you get a MAYBE. What kind of a facsimile does he use or take to stop that incoming facsimile? It is one similar to the one that he is stopping. And the instant he takes hold of 2 second facsimile, he has got two facsimiles, and they lock up. And that is a maybe. Then with Three, you just become a mirror to everything that is done to you, and you just do it to them. You can’t live that way in this society, so if you don’t do Three, you have to do Two. What a hell of a state, for then you have to pull up an old facsimile to handle every motion you receive, and everything starts to ball up on the track, and the track begins to feel like MEST. You start thinking and it’s heavy, and you think a second has gone by, and an hour has passed. So, you have that choice, or you can react. You can’t live with men and react on everything, and you can’t stop these motions going back out again - IF you don’t know that you can burn down the motion. Actually, if you don’t have obsession One, and a motion comes in, you examine it, and you disintegrate it. Theoretically, if someone took a shot at you with a high powered rifle, you could take a look at the bullet (it is only doing 4500 ft. per second, which is pretty slow compared to thought) and you could just say, “No” and it would be gone. If it did hit you, you’d just run the somatic. “Hey, what did you shoot me for? Oh! You’re mad at me. Oh! You’re going to stay mad at me ...Bzzzzzzz.... Anybody got a wreath?” So, you can see this business changes social relationships.

Last November (1951) I made a lecture on postulating the condition of beingness. Three quarters of the lecture is devoted to proving absolutely that there is no reason under the sun that you couldn’t say, “I’m going to be..” and immediately be - no processing required. The last quarter of the lecture is why it isn’t practical, and can’t be done. Here and there people pick up the first three quarters of this lecture and they go, “Wow!” “Gee, what am I doing way up here?” And they forget the last quarter entirely. He walks around rather dazedly, and in trying to talk to people he finds out he is out of communication with everybody, and has no language to tell people what he knows. He can’t translate anything he has got, so he takes a dive way down, bounces a couple of times, and settles out. You can depend on a person to go through that cycle if he postulates a state of being or knowing, and goes outside the tolerance band. So, here is the tolerance band we are studying - from this relative zero of not being up to 28. From there (0 ) down to the bottom Absolute Zero (00) the MEST is dead, for THETA when it gets that enturbulated, can’t support life in a MEST body.

If a person has obsession One (Bubble Gum) and doesn’t have the knowledge of his own ability to create energy, (because he makes his illusions out of actual energy) then he has two choices for survival, and they are both contra-survival. That’s what is wrong with this universe. It’s the fact that after you get this obsession One, you have only two choices, and both of them will wind you up in trouble. But, the reason for that is because this is a Static Universe that has a lot of motion in it. A lot of people have been busy working on this universe. They keep merging universes, and it keeps broadening and broadening, spreading and spreading, getting more and more agreement, and it’s not a single creation at any one time. And not being a single creation at any one time, you get into very bad shape on it, because you have to go into agreement with other people about their creations in order to survive in this universe at all. This universe, to exist, demands from you a certain amount of wrongness. What would happen to this universe if any one of you suddenly cut loose with all the horsepower necessary to blow it up? Actually, a couple of people deciding this wasn’t a very good universe, wouldn’t have to blow it up. They could just put it into then-ness by saying, “Then.” This is theoretical, but as a fact, saying “Then” is the only way this universe has of getting rid of anything. How many times have you heard, “I forget it.” or “Oh! I’ve put all that behind me, I’m not aberrated.” or “It doesn’t affect me anymore.” Do you know what happens when they put it all behind them? It isn’t behind them at all, it generally stands in front of you. It’s an unworkable solution, but all the therapy they had in the past was to put it into “Then”, and push it thoroughly enough into “Then” that it was squashed, and became a forgetter. So, actually a psychotic is changing his identity to himself every minute. He isn’t himself from one moment to the next, for that last moment is the forgotten. In other words, he doesn’t remember, and he doesn’t have a time span.

Wait until you get into an incident called, The Glare Fights. If you want to see the whole process taking place.. Well, once upon a time you could put out energy. You put out energy, and just pile it up on somebody and drive them into apathy, down to where he is practically a lump of matter. You run your preclear into one of these, and he says, “Hah! .... Zing,” and he is giving it to this other guy.

Dianetics is evidently the first time on the track that a therapy has existed to defeat this vicious cycle. That’s a fact! It would be very nice if I could find a P.C. some time that had an incident erased. But, I have been through all the P.C.s I know, and I find lots of times when they have been out of bodies, when they have known, when they have been on the Theta Track, and all I find are Two therapies. One, is the shift of identity that makes them someone else (and that is a therapy), and the other (Two) is packing all the facsimiles up into a round ball and calling it MEST, which amounts to the same thing. I find everybody with their earliest incidents in tact. Although they may not be aberrative and other things have happened in the meantime to desensitize them, they are still intact. They haven’t been erased. This (Dianetics and Scientology) is an awfully dirty trick we are playing on the MEST universe. It is! How are they going to control you if they can’t put their hands on you. Supposing you went ahead lifetime after lifetime picking up knowledge. Think what a wreck you would make out of our educational system. No piano teachers be cause you learned all that on the clavichord. This cycle in which we exist is fixed up just gorgeously, but it’s in very delicate balance.

And then, Bam, he is getting it back, and he loses and goes down into apathy. Then you find a real interesting somatic; he tries to go “crunch”. If you ever saw life trying to act like matter, that is it. It takes a long time to run. Why? Because it is down toward zero time. Time runs from Zero to Infinity. Up towards infinity of time you can have an enormous amount of motion per unit of time. The thought particularly, becomes almost unlimited per unit of time. As time becomes infinity thought becomes infinity. Remember this one, it is important. Down here in this MEST area, the MEST is so solid that it has a zero of time, so of course it has continuum. This galaxy of ours has been going on about 3.4 billion years according to the physicists. Well, it has such a long duration merely because it is so low on the time scale, being low on the matter scale. Watch your preclear as he runs down into an apathy or MEST like somatic where he is practically a chunk of matter. You watch him start to sail into this, and he will be going along fine until he hits the apathy. You will say, “Well, what’s happening? .. Answer me ... what’s occurring, what do you get now? ..What do you get now?”

If it weren’t for the fact that Earth is a prison, and it doesn’t matter what happens to it, it would be a rough deal to release Dianetics and Scientology. It would be a rough deal for those who desire to control this system. For those in control then, Dianetics and Scientology are highly antipathetic, because it permits you to control this system. Later on in these lectures you will suddenly recognize what I am talking about in its full clarity. What do you have a body for? For picks and shovels, among other things. You don’t get finger prints from a Theta body; police power is gone when the MEST bodies are gone.

He will say, “WHAT DID YOU SAY?”

Now, I give you these 3 stages so that you can know above this level the second axiom which goes before all the axioms, and is: Knowingness can be done by approximation and pervasion. (And this is completely aside from being done by facsimiles)

Actually from the first moment you spoke until the moment he speaks, he conceives that a very short period of time. To him it was quite a normal question and answer, but he is so low on the time band .hat his seconds are like your minutes. He thinks he made an instantaneous reply. Boil off is probably nothing more than this. Remember how everything seems timeless in a boil off? It’s really worse than that when you are aware that you are running apathy. Time goes on and on and on.

There are different methods of thinking other than facsimile thinking. It is not necessary for you to have experience to know. The trick of having experience ties you down on the time track. So, if you have to have experience to know, you can be controlled by these methods, because by blanking out your experience you don’t know. You don’t become cause, and you can be held in line.

The motion the preclear sees in the engram would appear motionless to you as an observer to it. It is moving to the preclear, but at a rate of speed which appears stopped to you, you being a little bit higher on the tone scale. The only reason that matter has duration, and thought has a slight duration is the difference in their position on the zero infinity line. So, you can expect to take hours with your preclear running the first few apathy incidents. The preclear will think he ran right through them, but you sure know differently.

Up high on the tone scale we have the two methods of knowing. Pervasion, which is knowing by being there in present time. You want to know what the Encyclopedia Brittanica has to say about something or other. It isn’t necessary for you to have read the encyclopedia cover to cover in 1792. That isn’t necessary. You just pervade the encyclopedia, and you know. What’s the use pervading the encyclopedia? Why not pervade the actual subject? Say the question is a steam plant. Just be the steam plant. Or take concrete. What’s the use of studying the constituents of concrete when you can be (or feel) the concrete? You get someone up on his perception level, or get your own up, and you will know better what it is. You actually cast your beingness to a sufficient distance to pervade some subject. You will look at the side of a milk bottle, and you want to know what it is. Well, you don’t look at the side of a milk bottle; you do your observation on the line of radar. You hit the milk bottle, and you feel this waxy surface of the milk bottle. You do your seeing actually by radar. It is a trick that makes you effect, that makes you do it by photons. Your theta being doesn’t need eyeballs.

This is very important, because the material that you are going to run has a preponderance of this in it. When what you are running has somatics in it, that are way down on the time band, they become timeless on the time track, and can appear to be with the preclear forever. Any incident which is chronic with the preclear in present time has an apathy level timelessness to it, and is held in place not by grief, not by anger, but by apathy and apathy alone. Apathy, which is nothing but thought that is just about matter. If you notice somebody with a swelling on the face, you know there is an area of that face which is in apathy. If that swelling continues on and on and on like goiter; it won’t do anything if you run phrases out of it, this out of it, that out of it. You can get him higher and higher on the tone scale, and make him happier, and he will come out of the incident ultimately. But, the way to get rid of that thing is to plow into the apathy part of it, and ride him on through that apathy. When you get the apathy off that incident, it has ceased to be timeless.

So, pervasion is one method of knowing. The second method is making a mock- up. You create an illusion (not a facsimile) you just approximate this situation over here. You understand that there is this situation over there, and you make this mock- up, and you change it in a couple of places in order to solve the problem. It just goes click. I did this on a ships’ steam engine during the war, and a fellow came up and said, “Where did you study steam engineering? You must have studied steam engineering; you went right up to that valve.” And I said, “I didn’t study steam engineering, I didn’t even know that valve existed until three minutes ago.” All during the war I had my motor mechanics and engine men nuts, because I didn’t know what I was doing on those engines. This was actually the process. The point is, you go down and look at the engine. The fellow says, “The camshaft is all roody rudded on the left hand side of the dibber bump,” and you say, ”What’s it got to do?” You ignore his answer, and you look at the engine, and this side over here feels like it doesn’t have enough oil. So you say, “What’s the matter with your oil gage on the port side?” He says, “Nothing, it works perfectly.” Then he takes a look at it, and says in wonder, “It’s plugged.” Any good mechanic or good electronic bug does this very thing. He just feels it would be better “This way,” and he will be right. He makes a mock-up that will do what he wants done, and then he builds the gadget he is making, to do what his mental mock-up is doing. Text books- Phooey! He feels it’s right this way. It’s a thought mock-up, not a facsimile. From a text book some real sharp guy might make a facsimile, and then the object, but it probably wouldn’t work. The facsimile is the hard way - the low toned way. This mock-up on the other hand, is an illusion he creates or destroys at will. It can’t be called a facsimile for it doesn’t have the solidity of a facsimile. It is so minute and it’s wavelength is so tiny he doesn’t even know it’s there. He’ll just say, “Well, it feels like it ought to be this way.” Those are two methods of knowing, and two methods of thinking that are ahead of facsimile combination. Facsimile combination is difficult, heavy, slow, and requires enormous importance, and a lot of other things. Maybe you don’t agree with these two methods of knowing.

Therefore, here is an answer to one of the most serious problems in processing. What makes an incident chronic? What makes it ride on the time track? What makes a preclear stick on the track? The answer is right here: zero time, which means he has an incident that is so motionless that he has it in a timeless stretch. The incident itself has so much “no time” that it rides with him on and on and on. Later on, after somebody has acquired such an incident, he can get a verbal holder. It will tie on the feeling of apathy or timelessness on the track, and the verbal holder will hold the incident as a lock. Basic on it will be that original apathy incident. These things you should know about the mechanics of thought, and that last one is very, very important. That is the mechanical holder, the mechanical chronic somatic, the mechanical chronic aberration, they are planted in a thought which is very close to matter.

As far as Time is concerned, if you are dealing with pure thought you aren’t dealing with any time. So, of course, you could know the past, the future, and all knowledge, for you aren’t dealing with time and space when you use thought this way. You aren’t making shapes in time and space. You run out to the country and ask farmer Brown, the medicine man, how things are going. He may say, “It’s going to rain tomorrow.” You say, “Why?” He says, “Oh, because my rheumatism hurts.” The hell it does. That is just a practiced answer, for he reads future, and knows rain. He might say, “Because the tree toads are ......”, but he is forecasting from knowing.

Many of you at this stage are wondering how much of the old data is valid, how many of the old books are valid. I want to bring you up to date. It is all valid. The “Handbook For Preclears” was something I went by as if it was a whistle stop, and then suddenly realized it was Chicago. “The Handbook For Preclears” was way ahead of itself. The Chart of Attitudes was, and is a very valuable piece of workable tech. for you. The only thing you have to do with the “Handbook For Preclears” to bring it up to date, is run it with the idea of the Overt Act and the Ded, which I will describe to you during these lectures.

I have given you a very rapid run down here on the substance of time, effort, these axioms, and maybe you feel I have just given you the preliminaries. A lot of them get expanded later. These are some of the principles on which the later material depends. How to resolve a maybe falls right back into - what is a maybe? You have to know what it is, before you can resolve it. You have gotten a look at this Zero and Infinity idea, and I have gone over it very rapidly. Don’t be dismayed if you haven’t assimilated all of this. The important points have been dressed up, and the background to them explained. Are there any questions?

You can work the same way with “Advanced Procedures and Axioms”, by knowing just the principle of the Motivator, the Overt Act, and the Ded. You can shift the text around to suit yourself.

Q. Are you going to tell us who “THEY” are?

One of your primary targets is the reduction of that which is almost matter, and that is apathy. If you ever have run any apathy out of yourself or out of a preclear, you know that it grinds awfully slow. That’s because it has a lot of time mixed up in it; an enormous amount of time in a little space. Here, low on the scale, we have approached time zero. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you have ever been anywhere near the Absolute Zero line at the bottom. You have a great margin between a zero of theta (Absolute Zero) and zero on our tone scale.

A. THEY, in that familiar phrase “They did it” has been with us a long time. I will tell you frankly that when “They did it” it means “YOU” did it. You did it to you, and you did it to you, and YOU becomes THEY. No reason to be paranoid about this universe being messed up; we all had a hand in it.

Something else you should know, is that the whole band has wavelength. All emotion and thoughts have their wavelengths and wave characteristics. You don’t have to know all about waves and characteristics to use these techniques, but you must recognize this point; that anger is a wave characteristic and a wave length, that aesthetics are a wave characteristic and a wave length, that sexual excitement is a wave characteristic and a wave length, and these wave lengths vary from zero to infinity - CAUSE. Cause is capable of producing a wavelength. There is no reason why up here, as a clear, you shouldn’t suddenly be able to look at an object, and just have it vanish. That’s why you are fascinated by a magician; rabbit - hat - no rabbit. You say, “Gee, he is cause.” Way back on the time track you have seen this, and done it. You disintegrated rabbits or erased them. There isn’t any difference between erasing a somatic, erasing a facsimile, and erasing a rabbit, except in the order of magnitude. The rabbit consists of some very well ordered, well patterned thoughts, but that doesn’t matter, it isn’t much different than one of these Time-Zero Engrams. You are going to run into them; your preclears are going to run into them and grind to a scrunching halt. The usual comment is, “It’s like walking into a stone wall.” It isn’t that solid really, it is more like walking into a very resistive gauze wall, but you can erase it.

Q. Would you differentiate between the various “PEOPLE” you mention? Do you mean humans, theta bodies, or what?

Your observation has already told you that the higher on the tone scale a person is, the better and faster he is at erasing incidents and blowing locks. Your experience has shown you that. You have watched preclears go up the tone scale, and get better and better at blowing whole chains of incidents and heavy engrams just by taking a look at them. What you were watching was the persons’ capability of generating “a disintegrating wave” increase. You weren’t watching incidents get lighter.

A. Well, I should differentiate and call them beings, and human beings, and so forth, but actually no matter where they started in on the track, no matter what race they started in as, no matter what number of Invader force they started in as in this universe, no matter what number of Creator, or anything else - it doesn’t matter, because they eventually wind up as people. Maybe some of them have tentacles, and some have horns, but they are still people, because they wind up in the same track. It doesn’t matter what universe a person comes from; he consists of the same component parts - Thought, Emotion, and Effort. We are dealing with the anatomy of thought as it applies to any universe. The MEST universe happens to be an intermediate universe, where it hasn’t happened as bad as it might be, and it sure isn’t as good as it might be.

They are the same incidents; it’s just the preclear is getting more power as he goes up in tone, and can turn more horsepower loose on facsimiles. Facsimiles are the first cousin to matter itself. They are the gradient scale of matter. Disintegrating matter, and disintegrating facsimiles are about the same thing. You get someone way up, and he can turn loose his horsepower and erase matter. The ability of a preclear to erase depends on where he is on the tone scale. He can erase at the tolerance band around, and below his position. An angry person can very often erase apathy. A person antagonistic can handle grief, anger, and maybe some apathy. One in boredom- if you can get them to do anything, has quite a bit of horsepower. Get someone around 3.0 and 4.0, and they really start chewing up the track. One at 5.0 or better, and you say, “How about running this kind of incident?” one with apathy in it, and the apathy just goes out - swoooooosh. Gone! But try to get a person in apathy to run apathy! They are stuck. So, you run the lightest lock on the case; walking in the door. That’s as big as he can handle; just walking in the door, and you run it and run it and run it, and eventually you get a reduction. You take someone up the tone scale and put him on the E-meter and watch the needle. Send him through an annoying day, and watch each little incident just blow, pfst, pfst. If he seems a little upset at the beginning of a session you ask him, “What’s the matter?” He will tell you, and it blows. With a person low on the tone scale you say, “All right, go through it” And he will say, “Why?” A person way up there can blow up matter; that’s where the legends of India came from. You may say it was hocus pocus, but No, it was done with a Buck Rogers disintegrator ray that is 60 trillion years old. This may seem rather odd to you, but can you think of any other reason why you get reduction and erasure of incidents?

Q. Would you clarify the point about an auditor who is auditing is committing an overt act?

When you take this theory and start applying it, all of a sudden our techniques become very workable to us. We know we have to get someone pretty well up the tone scale before we can run some stuff that’s way down the tone scale. So we use light techniques on a case before we use heavy techniques. Don’t run him into an apathy incident if he can’t erase anything lower than fear. You can’t take a person in fear, and do very much with apathy. So, it says you have to work him on up the tone scale with light techniques untangling his life to where he knows more and more, until he is up the tone scale to where you can push him through this apathy incident. But, don’t take him through apathy incident I (almost erased), apathy incident 2 (half erased), apathy incident 3 (one quarter erased), apathy incident 4 (one sixteenth erased), apathy incident 5 ..You say, “Get up off the couch.” So, he says, “O.K.”, but he can’t move. You put your hand under his head, and he is like putty. You will find them like that in an insane asylum. I hope that with these explanations you will understand a little bit more about what you are doing with processing.

A. First, I didn’t say that. I said that the auditor “conceives” that he is, because the idea of forgetting, and the idea of erasing can become confused in an auditors mind. There is a period between lives when they knock out a persons’ identity. By the way, “They” will some day have it done to them, just as you once did it to someone else. So, there is a knockout of facsimiles between lives. The mechanism there is that they show you a series of pictures, and they say, “Hey! Look, your memories are all disappearing. I’m being very specific about this incident. lt is actually a series of pictures, and they flash them by your eyes. They are just approximations of things that might have happened to you in that last lifetime. They aren’t your memories at all, but they are a mock-up of your memories. You see these things going by, and at the same time you are being hit with a nice wave motion, and the pictures fade out. They say, “See, we are erasing your memories, and now you feel much better,” and you go for it, because it seems like a good idea. In auditing the auditor is actually erasing painful moments. If the auditor confuses this between lives mock-up with the actual therapy he is doing, he will get stuck. with the mock-up himself. He will figure he is doing what has been done to him, which hangs him up in a maybe. Auditing, and don’t forget it, is the only way out of this thing that I know of. You can, by knocking out these heavy incidents, restore a guys knowingness, take the curtain off of his beingness, and particularly take out of the way those things which are jamming his ability To Create, or Wipe Away MEST. You are making it possible for him To Be. An auditor, quite often, in an aberrated state, will look at an individual, and he thinks he is auditing him; and he sees this guy all stretched out, and he is running this guy through a death. Maybe this auditor has a past life where he killed somebody, and he looks at this P.C., and looks at these dying facsimiles, and he gets all hung up in the maybe, and feels he is killing the P.C. Then instead of wanting to audit this, and finish the job up, he wants to back-off from this incident. The thing to do is to run the incident, and to have an auditor that doesn’t get hung up on the thought that he is doing an overt act to the P.C. when he is not. This is just a confusion, that is all. I hope that clarifies the point.

Now, get this one. Time has to be somewhere around the band Zero to 28 for a person to stick around in this universe. Space has to be along this band (0-28) to stay in this universe. It is necessary then for your preclear to have some feeling of freedom, of knowingness, and of expansiveness for him to do very much in processing. That knowingness, and all the rest of it add up to sanity, and that’s what sanity is. So, the more he knows, the better he knows it, the better he operates, the saner he is. Your whole job is just get him up to the level of sanity; not to run every engram in his bank. Therefore, processing can consist of just a shift of environment; give the guy more space- that’s all, or give him more time, and he will get saner; or education, fix it up so that he knows more, knows that what he knows has some truth, and is demonstrable to him. And by processing, which is removing from his track what he doesn’t know, and knocking this and that out until the first thing you know, he, of his own volition, will re-arrange all the incidents on the track. His track in other words, will become well spaced. When you are working on an occluded case you are working on a jammed track; you are working straight up against a forgetter. What’s a forgetter? What is forget and remember? Here at Zero is ultimate forget, and at infinity is ultimate remember. Ultimate forget is solid matter. In a big city where there are lots of crowds, it is harder to remember than in a small town where the population is sparse. If you live in a big house, it’s easier to remember that if you live in a small house. That’s a fact. Look at the clocks in Times Square; they are almost beyond count. People rush into subways, people rush up the steps, looking at clocks and clocks. You go out to a rural section and ask, “What time is it?” The guy looks at the sun and says, “Tain’t three yet.” He’s not interested in clocks. That is the difference. Nobody would call that rural group intellectuals, but they can reason better because they have more time and more space, which is more freedom, so there is more knowingness.

Q. Did you say that THETA had a wave length? I got lost.

How do you make somebody forget? Hit him! Simple, fast, and effective. What did you do when you hit him? You denied him space in too little time. He goes- Bong! Unconscious. What’s the difference in that, and your running up to Mrs. Jones and saying to her standing there in the store, “Mrs. Jones, your baby girl was in the second floor of your house, and it just burned down and she is dead.” Out goes Mrs. Jones. You have given her too much MEST motion in too little a space of time. You should break bad news slowly. That is called, “Dropping a Curve” on someone. The speed with which this curve is dropped has a lot to do with the physiological reaction of the person. Did you ever see anybody turn white when they were fed bad news? The way to fix a guy up so that he would forget everything would be to stand him up, and throw every kind of force at him imaginable; throw it heavily one after another, force, force, force; and each time that he tries to corn hat this force; throw him some heavier force. When he tries to combat that, throw him some heavier force. You know what will happen to him? He will forget. You can do this to him thoroughly enough with an electrical field so he will forget his identity his being, his knowingness, everything. He will die as identity, because his facsimile will all be piled up by this force. In other words, out of his memory banks you make, an apparent MEST unit. Instead of memories that can be handled, you have put in his mind a pile of MEST. That’s the way you do it. What’s the best forgetter - just take away the persons’ time and space.

A. THETA has no wave length. Theta has the ability to animate and to mobilize Matter, Energy, Space, and Time. Theta is a static, it does not change to any degree, but out of this static can come a created wave. This static not only animates and mobilizes, but also creates Matter, Energy, Space, and Time. So we haven’t changed the characteristic or ability of a static, or anything else. But, we have noted all of a sudden that from the static there was an emanation which was motion. It can create motion as well as mirror it.

Now, when you pick up this wave after wave of force and run it, he is able to stretch them out. Because when the incidents are poured in on him he is saying to himself, “I’m not cause, I can’t be cause, because here I am, and something out there has got all this time and space, I haven’t got any time or space, so therefore I’m not cause, and it is.” So, he goes down tone scale. That’s how you make then forget. The ultimate in forgetting is dying. You actually don’t want to die, but you would just as soon forget. The only mechanism that you can get, that is a good solid forgetter, is a good solid death. Furthermore, if you want someone to start down the tone scale, you give him an “identilessness” a confusion about who he is. If you want to get him really low on the tone scale you fix it up so that he doesn’t know anymore, which is the same as forgetting. All these mechanisms have to do with space, time, and thought. So, an operation (for instance) can tell you that you aren’t you, you are that MEST body, and you have a lot of incidents like this. You say, “Gee! Is that me? Well, a MEST body only lives one lifetime, I guess that is me all- right. Gee, I feel rather stupid about the whole thing.” And that is exactly what the mechanism is. A person who thinks he is his MEST body is way below the tone level of when he has isolated himself as his theta body. The second you isolate a persons’ theta body he goes right on up the tone scale. Why? Because he knows he has a span of time.

Q. I recently had an operation on my hand. What could I have done there on the operating table in the line of Dianetics about that.

When you start picking up these forgetter incidents, you give him more space and time, and his identity and beingness recovers. The most intimate individuality that you can get is a person who is all 8 dynamics. He would really know, “I AM ME.” He doesn’t say or think, “I am you.” You auditors are often running into the situation where you put somebody on the couch and run this and run that, and finally you - the auditor, get a headache. You get restimulated. What is restimulation? It is obviously a mis-identification between yourself and the preclear. One of the reasons is that auditing is an overt act from where you are on the tone scale It is, because it is a dramatization of an incident. What is dying except forgetting. What are you doing as an auditor? You are trying to erase the preclears facsimiles. You automatically add it up that you are trying to kill the preclear, because you are taking his facsimiles away from him, therefore, to some degree, that much of it is dramatizing dying. What we consider an identity in the MEST universe is a composite of all your experiences. That is incorrect, but that is what we say, so we get the idea that we must be killing this preclear by helping him out, and everyone you have killed on the track (and that is a considerable number) goes into restimulation. Also there is a between lives experience that you think you are dramatizing, because is has to do with erasing someones’ facsimiles. All it is actually, is piling them up in one place. That goes into restimulation, and the auditors’ perceptics turn off, because he hits this incident. Process out that incident, and the auditors’ perceptics turn on again. This is simple; once you know the answers all these things become simple. That has been a big worry to a lot of auditors, why they identified themselves with the preclear, and why they became more and more occluded. A lot of auditors have done this, and there is your solution.

A. Nothing. That is, unless you want to take into consideration the whole field of anesthesia and hypnosis. Actually there is no reason why you shouldn’t, for it is a method of handling thought. You could actually have blocked off sensation in the in the area, and then turned it on afterwards. But you see, I have never included the words, anesthesia, hypnosis, or suggestion into the research of the field of thought, because of the terrible confusion which already exists in the minds of people concerning anything about thought. They are so confused about those words, that the fact that the P.C. is horizontal, and the hypnotic subject and the psychoanalysts’ patient are also sometimes horizontal, is absolute proof that they are all the same thing. You, in desperation, tell them that Dianetics does not use hypnotism. They conclude from that Dianetics does not include hypnotism. That is wrong, for the field of thought includes hypnotism, but Dianetics as a process does not employ hypnotism. To get back to your question, there are forms of self-hypnosis that would have shut your arm down for you. Then you could have gone back and run it all out, at which time you get the somatics anyway, so what’s the use? Anything that is in the field of the mind is in the field of Dianetics or the broader field of Scientology. Don’t limit the scope of your subject.

A long time ago I told people that prenatals existed. Two years later they write in medical sections of Readers Digest, Coronet, etc. that prenatals exist. The M.D.s are very alert this time; they are only 2 yrs. behind Dianetics. That’s pretty good, in fact it’s remarkable. As far as the psychologists and psychiatrists are concerned, it is our own fault for crushing them with a concept for which they, by training, can have no reality. We said, “you’ve got to take this,” and tried to shove it down their throats, and they got kind of mad at us. l hey have drifted around now to where they are calling it something else, but they are using it. I have turned out a book called, “Symbological Processing” which is kind of a dirty trick, for it lets a counselor (them) do more counseling in less time, while knowing less about it, than anything you ever saw, and get more results.
